Behind the Scenes, Crew Love, Yardbird • Jan 09, 2018
The Yardbird bar isn’t short of unique characters, and Justin, in particular, is sure to bring a smile to any face. One of the few Hong Kong natives in the front of house team, Justin is equal parts charming, entertaining, and skilled behind the bar. Read on to get to know him and a few of his favorite things.
What is your role at Yardbird and how long have you been with the company?
I’m a bartender. I’ve been with the company for 14 months.
Where are you from and how long have you been in Hong Kong?
I’m Filipino, but I was born and raised in Hong Kong.
What do you love about the work you do?
I get to meet all kinds of people every day from all walks of life, and Yardbird plays good music.
What are your pet peeves at work?
How hot the bar gets.
You have a lot of tattoos. Which is your favorite piece so far and why?
Obviously, the Nutcracker. As a kid, I always loved how they looked, but I have yet to watch the ballet. Shout out to the artist Alfred.
How do you stay healthy and find balance while working long hours, working nights, and having to drink as part of your job?
Not thinking about it too much. I’m still trying to find the balance since we moved from Bridges Street because there are no stairs. Need to get a new workout.
What’s your beverage of choice and why?
Kakuhi – it’s easy.
What are your favorite spots in Hong Kong for food? How about for drinks?
Since it’s cold right now, I like hitting up the clay pot rice spot in Kennedy town. Racks City for sure for drinks!
If you weren’t in this line of work, what would you be doing?
Definitely something in the creative industry like design or advertising.
What is your favorite thing about Hong Kong?
I grew up here so it’s my hometown, but I love how fast-paced and efficient it is.
Where is your favorite place to travel to and why?
